The Cherokee story of The First Fire tells of a community confronted with the transformative power of fire, and the differing attempts to understand, approach and eventually utilise it safely.
The Story
The First Fire
“In the beginning, the world was cold and there was no fire.
The Thunders sent lightning into a great hollow sycamore tree growing on an island. The animals could see smoke rising from the tree, but the surrounding water kept the fire beyond their reach.
They gathered in council to decide who might retrieve it.
Raven flew first, but the heat scorched his feathers black and forced him back. Screech Owl looked into the hollow tree, but the rising heat reddened his eyes. Other birds and animals tried, yet each was defeated by the flames, smoke or water.
Finally, Water Spider volunteered. Although the others doubted that such a small creature could succeed, she spun a little bowl upon her back, crossed the water and approached the burning tree. She placed a glowing coal inside her bowl and carried it safely back across the water.
From that time onwards, the world had fire.”

Illustrative worked example
A public institution is considering an Artificial Intelligence system to support decisions affecting access to essential services. Initial testing indicates that the technology could improve speed and consistency, and attention turns quickly towards implementation.
Yet technical performance does not reveal the whole picture. Historical data may contain embedded inequalities. Those affected may not understand how decisions are reached or how they can challenge them. Staff may place greater confidence in the system than its limitations justify.
