Inheritance Across Worlds
Laila came from a lineage shaped by movement across geographies, cultures, and regimes.
Her ancestors were Muslims who emigrated from India and settled in South Africa before Partition, later moving to Botswana in the years before independence. Their journeys, and those of the generations that followed, unfolded across changing geographies, cultures and political landscapes forming part of the inheritance that shaped the lens through which she came to understand the world.
Born into that inheritance. A childhood between apartheid’s shadow and a new nation’s idealism. Dinner table politics, tales of the Arabian Nights, fables of Hans Christian Andersen, American media, emerging technologies, Orwell, and Achebe.
The Formation of a Lens
It was the interplay between the above that formed the lens: an understanding that nothing exists in isolation. Interconnectedness became the foundation through which she came to understand people, organisations and societies — to hold complexity, to see relationships instead of sides, and to recognise patterns that transcend disciplines, contexts and generations.
She combined earlier studies in computer science, AI, and robotics with a degree in Business Information Technology together with an interest in philosophy, psychology and the human condition. This provided firm foundations whereupon entering the workforce, her role in these institutions was clear: to implement forward-thinking, progressive, and paradigm-shifting perspectives through governance, transformation, risk, culture, and leadership.
Experience Into Inquiry
Here, experience became distillation. Moments of challenge became inquiry. Experience filtered through inherited wisdom, observation, and reflection until the underlying threads became visible. Those threads were then recognised across contexts, across scales and across systems, revealing that many of the challenges facing individuals, organisations and societies shared common underlying conditions.
The sum of what was inherited, observed and lived left an indelible impression of the enduring consequences of injustice, and with it a visceral need to understand and challenge the conditions that give rise to and perpetuate injustice and inequity. That inquiry shaped a lifelong search not only to understand those patterns, but to reimagine futures and create new realities that are more just, equitable and regenerative.
The Emergence of Psyche Ethos
Psyche Ethos emerged from that continuing inquiry: an ethos shaped across generations; formed through migration, contrast, interconnectedness and continual inquiry; honed into insight, distilled into principles, and applied across disciplines in pursuit of greater coherence, alignment and humanity.
Where patterns can be recognised, they can be reimagined. Where fragmentation exists, coherence can be instilled. Where systems lose their humanity, they can be redesigned with integrity, purpose and justice.

Psyche Ethos draws on more than three decades of experience developed within and across globally significant and systemically important organisations, navigating environments where complexity, consequence and competing interests converge. The founder, Laila, has led at the intersection of governance, risk, institutional transformation, organisational culture and strategic change — shaping strategy, leading complex transformation and bringing judgement to consequential decisions at senior executive and Board level. Her experience spans multiple industries, jurisdictions and regulatory environments across the UK, Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the United States. It is this accumulated depth of judgement — the ability to see across systems, recognise patterns, interrogate assumptions and connect what may otherwise remain fragmented — that forms part of the intellectual and practical foundation of Psyche Ethos.
